Covid-19 and the Practice of Law: Moving Files Forward During a Global Pandemic

By: Taylor Morin, Associate Lawyer

On March 11, 2020, New Brunswick reported its first case of Covid-19. Since that time, the Province and its citizens have had to make tough decisions and sacrifices to contain the virus. Suffice to say, these past nine months have been difficult for everyone.

During the pandemic, professions around the world have been forced to adapt and overcome challenges that they were not prepared for. The practice of law was no exception.

At the Mike Murphy Accident Team, the health and safety of our team and our clients is a top priority. We are proud to state that we were one of the first law firms to transition from working in the office, to working from home.

This was a possibility because of our wonderful support staff and technology support team. Within days, all of our lawyers were fully equipped to work from home with computers that were connected to our office servers. Seemingly overnight, we were able to do everything from home that we could do at the office.

We are proud to say that even during a global pandemic, the Mike Murphy Accident Team remained readily available to all of our clients. Furthermore, we are proud to say that we experienced little to no interruption in the conduct of our files.

Through the use of video-conference technology, we were able to have face to face meetings with our clients, insurance adjusters, other lawyers, and each other. This ensured that the communication lines remained open and that we were able to continue serving our clients to the highest degree. Furthermore, we used video-conference technology to proceed with various litigation processes, such as: discoveries, motions, mediations, and settlement conferences.

Although we have been back in the office since late May, we continue to use this technology to limit unnecessary contact during the pandemic. Furthermore, we continue to abide by Public Health guidelines, and we are always thinking of different ways to make our office safer. This has kept our team and our clients safe during this very difficult time.

At the Mike Murphy Accident Team, we are hoping for the best, but we are prepared for the worst. No matter what happens, we are committed to providing the highest degree of service to our clients.
